Meningitis ACWY Vaccination

Meningitis is transmitted through close contact via nasal or throat droplets, such as coughing, sneezing, or kissing. The meningitis ACWY vaccination guards against A, C, W, and Y bacterial strains. To ensure protection before travelling to a high-risk area, aim to receive the vaccine at least two weeks in advance.

Further Information

Side effects: The ACWY vaccine may lead to mild side effects like redness, swelling at the injection site, tiredness, and occasionally, a high temperature.

Additional precautions: Seek immediate medical attention if you or a fellow traveller show signs of meningitis. Note, the ACWY vaccine does not cover meningitis B.

Risks caused by meningitis: Meningitis can lead to inflammation around the spinal cord and brain, potentially causing brain damage and death.
